The Local Area

The Olive Tree is set in a peaceful and unspoilt part of Cornwall. We are centrally located, ideal for exploring all the famous parts of the county, but I honestly believe that if you wanted a more relaxing holiday, you could spend a week travelling no more than fifteen miles in any direction.

Mystical and atmospheric, Bodmin Moor starts five miles away, and you certainly won't encounter crowds there! See http://www.bodminmoor.co.uk/ for more information.

The lovely river Lynher is on the doorstep, much of which can be walked along at different points. It is a very clean river and home to kingfishers, otters and herons.

Views of the area can be admired from the top of nearby Kit Hill, a countryside park, or Caradon Hill, common land grazed by wild ponies, sheep and cattle. Spotting hamlets and villages in the distance, it is hard to believe that England is an over populated country.  Either of these hills you can walk up, or alternatively drive to the top. Tim and I first walked up to Caradon Hill after lunch at the very good Crow's Nest Inn, via the stunning and little known Gonamena Valley, see

http://www.geocities.com/teammanley/southcaradon/GonInc.htm , it took quite a while and despite the wonderful views, he was not amused to discover that a small road actually led to the top of the hill!

Tavistock and Launceston are attractive market towns both situated about ten miles away and well worth exploring. Tavistock is on the edge of Dartmoor which has spectacular scenery, but quite different to Bodmin Moor. A lovely area to enjoy in good weather, but difficult to imagine living on in the middle of winter.

We are on the edge of the Tamar Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Morwellham Quay in the valley is a World Heritage Site, http://www.morwellham-quay.co.uk/ and many new footpaths are being opened up to enable the area to be enjoyed more fully. From Calstock, a train or boat can take you up the river to Plymouth should you fancy a day exploring the city or shopping.

Apart from all the well known attractions Cornwall has to offer, it's worth mentioning that we are a mere four miles from the famous St Mellion golf course!

Tintagel and Boscastle seeem to be particularly popular at the moment and are a scenic easy hour's drive away on the north coast.

Some of the best fishing in Cornwall is available on our doorstep, lakes on Bodmin Moor or river fishing just a mile down the road.
